Five-star Allgäu camping with a spa and Neuschwanstein on the horizon
Hopfensee is one of Germany's most decorated campsites, sitting on the shore of a small warm lake just north of Füssen with the Tannheim mountains filling the skyline. The site is unusually adult in tone: a serious wellness complex with pools, saunas and treatment rooms, a good restaurant, immaculate terraced pitches with private sanitary options, and a lakeside promenade. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles are ten minutes away, and the Alpine passes into Austria start at the end of the valley.
Value check: Genuinely expensive for a pitch. Worth it only if the spa and lakefront are the point of the trip.

The spa is not a campsite spa, it is a spa that happens to be on a campsite. Pitch was level, hedged and had its own tap and drain. We booked again before we left.

Woke up to that view every morning for nine days. Cycled around the lake before breakfast, castles in the afternoon. Restaurant is genuinely good, not just convenient.

It is expensive by German standards and it is not aimed at young children. Everything else is close to faultless. Book months ahead for a lakeside row.
