Under Germany's highest mountain, open all year
At Grainau, directly beneath the Zugspitze massif and a few minutes from the cog railway station, this is a year-round alpine base built for people who came for the mountains. Pitches are hard-standing and level, sized for large motorhomes, with a modern heated sanitary building designed for winter use. There is a small wellness area, a restaurant with a terrace facing the Waxenstein, and a ski bus in season. Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Partnach Gorge are ten minutes away; Austria is closer still.
Value check: Above-average pitch price, but it is open all year and the mountain access is immediate.

Heated pitches, heated sanitary block, ski bus at the gate. Minus twelve outside and we were comfortable the whole week. Very few sites in the Alps do this well.

The mountain views are the attraction — the site layout is quite hard-surfaced and car-park-like. Immaculate facilities though, and hiking straight from the entrance.

Walked to the cog railway, up to the summit, back for dinner on the terrace. Kids found the site itself a bit dull on the rest day.
