Sweden's surf bay, with camping right behind the break
Apelviken is the surf and kitesurf capital of Sweden, a broad shallow bay just south of Varberg where the wind is reliable and the water is warm by Nordic standards. The site runs along the bay behind the beach: caravans and motorhomes on open grass terraces with sea views, cabins behind, a surf school and board hire at the water's edge, and a good café. Varberg's fortress, cold bathhouse and town centre are a flat twenty-minute cycle north along the coast path.
Value check: Fair pitch prices for a beachfront site on the Halland coast, and it stays open all year.

Kitesurfed every day for a week. Front-row pitches look straight down the bay and the surf school is fifty metres away. Nothing else in Sweden is quite like this.

Great for teenagers learning to surf. Bring proper windbreaks; the bay is exposed and that is exactly why the surfers are here.

Empty beach, dog section, coast path all the way into Varberg for the cold bathhouse. Quieter and cheaper after the schools go back.
