Midnight sun camping at the top of the Gulf of Bothnia
Arcus is Luleå's city campsite, set beside a sports complex and a short cycle from the centre of town and the water. This far north the appeal is the light: in June and July it barely gets dark, and the site fills with travellers heading for or returning from Lapland. Pitches are open and gravelled, well suited to motorhomes, with cabins and a sauna. Gammelstad church town — a UNESCO site of over four hundred red wooden cottages — is fifteen minutes away, and the Luleå archipelago boat leaves from the harbour.
Value check: Cheap for how far north it is, and an obvious overnight stop on the way to the Arctic Circle.

Sat outside at one in the morning reading without a lamp. Site is functional rather than beautiful, but for a northern trip it is exactly the right base.

Clean, easy, good service point for the motorhome, and a supermarket nearby. Gammelstad was the highlight of our whole Sweden trip.

Staff went out of their way to help us find a mechanic. Cycle path into Luleå is flat and pleasant. Sauna is a proper Swedish one.
